Most of what the bible has to say about fasting is related to our relationship with other people. When we approach fasting for the right purpose and with right attitude we find ourselves praying for those around us and those in our community.
We fast and pray for the sick, the afflicted, the enslaved, and the sinful. We fast on behalf of the unrepentant, the overwhelmed, the depressed and the suicidal. We fast for the poor, the homeless, the weak and the addicted. In other word, we fast for those with needs.
But I want to point out the benefits that God promises us for taking on this responsibility. He is pleased when we concern ourselves with the things that He is concerned about. He gives us certain promises that help us out even though the rewards are not our primary concern.
According to the bible here are 10 benefits of fasting:
1. You shall be healed from sickness. Is 58:8
2. He shall be your rear guard and protect your back. Is 58:8
3. You shall call and He will answer. Is. 58:9
4. He will guide you continually. Is 58:11
5. He will satisfy your soul during a drought. Is 58:11
6. He will strengthen your bones. Is 58:11
7. Your life will be like a watered garden. Is. 58:11
8. As you fast in private you will be rewarded openly. Mt. 6:18
9. As you fast your prayers will be heard by God. Acts 10:30
10. Fasting allows you to recognize Jesus when He shows up even when others don't see anything happening out of the ordinary. Lk. 2:37
I hope this helps you recognize that there is a benefit to serving God almighty. As we concern ourselves with the issues that God is concerned about He will take care of our problems.
