I have moved a facebook discussion on homosexuality to this blog page in order for each discussion point to be adequately addressed. link to original facebook page I will spend the next few weeks focusing on the following thoughts that were raised on our recent facebook post. Here they are:
- God is love! So why do you judge me!
- Did God make me this way?
- Why do Christians hate?
- Can sin affect our weather/environment?
- What does the current trend of legalizing gay marriage mean to God?
I am sure that our conversation will touch on other topics as well but this is a good start. I have noticed that our "pray for pensacola" website and facebook page has a following among gay people. That is good. I shows me that I am not speaking just to regular church folk. I realize that these are difficult topics and expect lively discussion.
I will delete all hateful and mean comments regardless of your position.
1. God is love. The bible says, 1 John 4:8 "whoever does not love does not know God, for God is Love" A common statement when the discussion of lifestyle arises is "God loves me, you have no right to judge me." This is partial truth but stops short from explaining the whole story. Let me tell you my story.
Before I became a Christian I would get drunk regularly, smoke drugs and pursue sex with different women. I remember very clearly that when I was 21 y/o God showed up in my life, in my dreams and in my thoughts. He was loving me and speaking to me about His plan for my life. His words were similar to the following: "I love you and have a plan for your life but your current lifestyle is not conducive to the purpose I have for you" I recognized that my lifestyle was wrong according to God's rules. I had to come to the realization that God created the world and the rules. I couldn't change His rules to fit my behavior. If I really wanted God to be real in my life, I had to accept him on His terms. God loves me! Yes. But the purpose of His love was to rescue me from myself and my sin. He didn't love me and encourage me to continue in sin. His love was to rescue me and give me a better option. I had to accept His love and His love wanted to change me.
Christians back then told me I needed Jesus. It would have been easy for me to say to the Christians back then, "you are judging me, after all God made me this way and He loves me this way." But that is partial truth. God loved me but he didn't love my lifestyle. Look at it this way, God loves the liar but doesn't want him to keep on lieing. God loves the thief but doesn't want him to keep on stealing. God loves each of us but also expects us to understand His rules.
John 3:16 "God so loved the world that He gave his only begotton son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life".
God loved the world and gave his son Jesus. Jesus died for our sins. He is not just Love but he is also Savior, Judge, Friend, Peacemaker, Healer, etc. We cannot look at just one of his attributes and forget the others. I have noticed that some of my younger readers like to say that Christians hate gays. I personally have never met a Christian that hates gay people. I have seen some on television but never in real life. Every Christian I know preaches the same message to ALL people. "Repent and be baptized!" Jesus ran into prostitutes, adulterers, thieves, etc. His message was always the same when they came to him for help. He would tell them that their sins were forgiven and then would tell them to go and sin no more. So this is the message, If we want to know God and have eternal life we must take all of God. All of his rules, all of his love, all of his judgement, all of his healing, all of his plan, etc.
So this is where we are today. God love us but he has rules concerning lifestyle.
